The Secretary to the Lagos State Government (SSG), Mrs. Folashade Jaji, has advocated a more severe punishment for rapists, saying that is the only way to deter others from committing the evil act.
Speaking while hosting members of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Women Commission, Lagos State Council, in her office at Alausa, Mrs. Jaji said cases of rape and domestic violence had escalated to a dimension that must no longer be condoned.
While recalling that the State’s House of Assembly had called for strict implementation of rape laws, cancellation of stigmatization of rape victims as well as acceleration of rape cases in courts with stiffer punishment, the SSG stressed that the State government had not relented in addressing the heinous crime.
She said: “The First Lady, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and other relevant Ministries and Agencies have been taking multi-faceted actions against rape and domestic violence in the State”.
While urging rape victims to be at the forefront of the campaign against the dreadful crime by speaking out, Jaji advised Lagosians, especially parents, to join the government and other stakeholders to end the vices in the society.
In her remarks, the Chairperson, TUC Women Commission, Comrade Yemisi Oyejide, represented by the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Adeyosola Onasanya, said the visit was to ask the SSG to lend her voice to the “Say No To Rape and Gender Based Violence” campaign of the organisation.
